New Jersey Acupuncturist Charged With Sexually Assaulting His Patient

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Mar 05, 2024 | 0 Comments

In February, Dr. Jeng K. Kuan, a 57-year-old resident of Matawan, New Jersey, was charged with two sex crimes relating to the alleged sexual assault of one of his patients. Dr. Kuan is the clinic director at the Prosperity Health Center in Matawan, and his website states that he is a licensed chiropractor, physician, and acupuncturist.

If you are a licensed professional who has been accused, arrested, or charged with a sex-related crime, it's critical that you seek the services of an experienced New Jersey criminal attorney immediately. These are serious allegations and could jeopardize not just your license or certification but also your freedom. Not the Typical Acupuncture Appointment

In the affidavit that the Monmouth County Prosecutor released to the Patch, further details have emerged as to what happened.

On January 24, 2024, an individual had an acupuncture appointment with Dr. Kuan. This patient had received acupuncture treatments from Dr. Kuan in the past.

The appointment began with Dr. Kuan asking the patient to get fully undressed and put on a gown. The patient mentioned that she wasn't asked to do this in previous sessions but did as asked.

After placing acupuncture needles in her legs, the patient claims that Dr. Kuan inserted his fingers into her. She also states that he visually examined private parts of her body. The patient asserts that she did not consent or agree to any of these events.

Arrest and Criminal Charges

The day after her appointment, the patient contacted Matawan Police to report the alleged sexual assault. Dr. Kuan was then arrested on February 1, 2024.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor charged Dr. Kuan with one count of second-degree sexual assault and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact.

Legal Defense

Getting arrested and charged for criminal sex offenses is bad enough, but doing so within the context of your professional duties adds another layer of problems. In addition to a potential conviction for rape, sexual assault, criminal sexual contact, or indecent exposure, you might also have to register as a sex offender.

Then there's getting arrested for alleged criminal activity that occurred through your job as a licensed professional. If this happens to you, you may find yourself needing legal representation to not just stay out of jail, but continue your profession.

Even if you can survive the criminal proceedings, you're still at risk of losing your professional license or certification. This could occur if you're subject to professional licensure disciplinary proceedings.

You Need a Criminal Defense Lawyer and an Advocate for Your Professional License

If you've been charged with one or more sex crimes, you face the prospect of not only prison time but of having to register as a sex offender. If you're in a profession where you work with people, this could also result in you losing your livelihood. With so much on the line, you should hire an attorney as soon as possible.
