Normally, Princeton University getting media attention for the actions of its alumni is good for the school. That wasn't the case in March 2024 when a well-known Princeton alumnus was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography.
Criminal charges don't mean guilt, but allegations can damage a person's reputation, career, and relationships. When that person is well-known in their community, the damage can be that much greater. Even if the charges are dismissed or the defendant is acquitted, a cloud may hang over how people view them.

Internet Crimes
Child pornography falls under the category of Internet crimes. While possession itself is illegal, it's generally the uploading or downloading of child pornography that catches law enforcement's attention.
That was the situation for Roy ‘Trey' Farmer. A 1993 graduate of Princeton, Farmer owns and manages several art festivals. In the philanthropic world, he's a board member of the Princeton University Glee Club Foundation, Queer Princeton Alumni, and the New York Philharmonic Society.
The charges allege that in January 2024, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children tipped off the Mercer County Prosecutor's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit about an upload of child pornography originating in Mercer County. They identified Farmer, who lives near Princeton's main entrance, as the suspect.
When the Mercer County Tactical Response Team arrested Farmer at his home, they also seized “multiple items of evidentiary value.” The story subsequently attracted national attention because of Farmer's professional reputation and his work advocating for the arts and LGBT issues.
The stigma against those who possess and share child pornography is such that even baseless allegations can permanently damage a person's reputation. The Internet is forever, and media attention around such charges can be almost impossible to escape.
Sex Offender Registry
In New Jersey, those who are found guilty of possessing or distributing child pornography may be required to register on the state's sex offender registry. Even if an individual moves away from New Jersey, their new state of residence may require them to register.
Sex offenders fall into three tiers. Even those on Tier 1, which is the lowest risk, must inform law enforcement of their place of residence. Tier 1 offenders won't appear on the state's Internet registry but may still need to inform current or potential employers.
