How Many NJ Police Resources Does it Take to Arrest a Man Over Cannabis?

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Apr 23, 2025 | 0 Comments

A man in Brick, New Jersey, was arrested recently on multiple counts associated with selling cannabis and psilocybin from his home. James Giordano, 37, was targeted by a months-long investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Narcotics Strike Force, Asset Forfeiture Squad and Economic Crime Squad of the Prosecutor's Office, Special Emergency Response Team, and Street Crimes Unit of the Brick Police Department, and the Barnegat Police Department Crime Reduction Unit.

Cannabis charges in New Jersey are a serious matter, even though the legal landscape of cannabis in the state is evolving. If you're facing cannabis or other drug-related charges in the state of New Jersey, the Lento Law Firm Criminal Defense Team is here to help. Give us a call at 888.535.3686 or contact us online to learn how we can protect your rights.

A Massive Effort, But For What?

Giordano's arrest came from a coordinated effort of at least four different police units. What was the cost of this operation to New Jersey taxpayers? Couldn't all those police resources have been better allocated?

Cannabis is recreationally legal in New Jersey, as it is in many other states in the nation. While the sale of cannabis is tightly regulated by the state, it's hard to argue that it's a dangerous enough substance that four separate police units needed to be involved in catching someone selling it from their home.

While it is still illegal in New Jersey, psilocybin possession has already been decriminalized in several states. It is also being legalized for medical use in a number of states, including New Jersey. So again, what exactly made Giordano's actions so egregious that it took a multi-unit coordinated effort to arrest him?
