Who hasn't tip-toed into the office copy room to copy a personal document or fast-walked to the department printer to retrieve a printout of something not work-related before it could be intercepted by a colleague or boss?
It would be unusual to be prosecuted for the occasional, innocent use of an employer's sticky note stack, fax machine, or label maker, but smart employees understand there's a line. Others might forget that, especially if they've enjoyed being in a position of power for a length of time. That's what may have happened recently in a high-profile case out of Clark, New Jersey.
In mid-January, in a stunning reversal of fate, the city's long-serving mayor resigned his post just days after swearing in for his seventh term in the wake of a criminal plea deal. Sal Bonaccorso appears to have taken the petty use of office supplies to the next level, pleading guilty to using city resources and even forging signatures for his personal business.

Gotta Keep ‘Em Separated
In former mayor Sonaccorso's case, which accused him of using city computers, fax machines, and even staffers to run his private business, as well as forging documents to perform work his company wasn't licensed for, he lost a lot, but it could have been worse.
Through his plea deal, he dodged a possible 5-10-year prison sentence. But he lost his life's vocation and stepped down as mayor. His backup took a hit, too, with his business now banned from holding public contracts for 5 years.
This kind of loss can happen to any New Jersey business or government professional found guilty of a nonviolent crime such as tax fraud, identity theft, forgery, or money laundering. These crimes can be prosecuted at varying degrees, and those found guilty can face significant fines and lengthy prison sentences. What can be worse, though, is the damage that a conviction can have on one's career trajectory and personal and professional reputation.
