About the Central Municipal Court of Bergen County

In addition to many municipalities having their own municipal courts, Bergen County is the only county in New Jersey to have a central municipal court dealing with municipal cases at the county level. Under state law, a county may establish a central municipal court if the following are true:

  • The county has a population exceeding 900,000;
  • The county has a population density of less than 4000 per square mile; and
  • The county has its own county police force or park police force.

Currently, Bergen County is the only county in New Jersey that qualifies in this manner. The court is located on Hudson Street in Hackensack.

While each borough and township may have its own municipal court for local violations, the Central Municipal Court of Bergen County mainly handles municipal-level offenses brought by county law enforcement. This includes traffic violations, breaches of county ordinances, and disorderly persons offenses resulting from arrests by the sheriff's department. For more serious offenses classified as indictable, the court conducts preliminary hearings before transferring these cases to Bergen County Superior Court, also located in Hackensack, NJ.
