14-Year-Old Trafficked Across State Lines

A Brooklyn man has admitted his involvement in a child sex trafficking conspiracy. The U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey announced that 30-year-old Soauib Butcher pleaded guilty in Newark federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor.

After luring a 14-year-old girl away from a Bridgewater group home, Butcher reportedly forced her into prostitution. Between August 2019 and January 2020, he brought the victim to New York City and Elizabeth, New Jersey, where Butcher and a co-conspirator arranged for customers to perform sexual acts with the victim in exchange for money.

Potential Charges for Sex Trafficking

Although punishment hasn't been handed out yet, the defendant has a sentencing hearing scheduled for early 2025. In New Jersey, sex trafficking involving a minor is prosecuted as a first-degree crime. Conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor, for which the defendant has been convicted, carries a maximum term of life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Additionally, the court may order restitution to the victim, which can further increase financial obligations.

Like Butcher, those convicted of sex crimes in New Jersey are required to register as sex offenders under Megan's Law. Monitoring and restrictions used a tiered system, but those convicted of first-degree sex crimes are likely to endure lifelong limitations on where they can live, who they may come into contact with, and other personal freedoms. The steep consequences make it crucial for defendants to fully understand what they are up against.
