A New Jersey man is facing multiple charges after being accused of meeting a 13-year-old girl in a local park, offering her money in exchange for sexual acts, then sexually assaulting her in a North Bergen motel room. The defendant, Henry Sunun Sutuj, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Sex Crimes Involving Minors are Particularly Serious

When a minor is the victim of an alleged sexual assault, the penalties can be extremely serious. In this case, prosecutors state that they have charged the defendant with:

  • Human Trafficking (presumably for allegedly arranging for the transport of the victim to the hotel), which is a “first-degree” crime;
  • Two counts of Promoting Child Prostitution, also a first-degree crime;
  • Engaging in Prostitution with a Minor, a second-degree crime;
  • Sexual Assault, a second-degree crime;
  • Four counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a third-degree crime;
  • Criminal Sexual Contact, a fourth-degree crime

The Hudson County Prosecutors' Office Special Victims Unit worked with the West New York Police Department as well as the US Marshals Service to investigate the allegations and identify and arrest the defendant. This, plus the fact that the defendant was in custody less than 10 days after the alleged sexual assault, demonstrates how seriously prosecutors take it when a child is allegedly sexually assaulted.
